La citazione viene erroneamente attribuita a Desmond Tutu che in realtà ha solamente citato l'aneddoto durante un discorso al Waldorf-Astoria Hotel di New York, poco prima di ricevere il premio Nobel nel 1984.
In realtà, la prima traccia della citazione è in Rolf Hochhut, The Deputy, 1963: qui la frase viene attribuita a Jomo Kenyatta senza alcun riferimento temporale o di altro genere.
